“When I first started Jiu Jitsu just over six months ago – unbeknownst to many of my friends and extended family – I was also trapped within the precarious grips of an eating disorder that had been stalking me for the past few years.

When I took my first Jiu Jitsu class – I left with a lot of presumptions about what would happen next. I though that it was going to be absolutely brutal, that I wasn’t even going to be strong enough to be any good and I also though I wouldn’t last longer than a couple of weeks. But I loved it,
I began to love it so much – I would even bail on uni lectures to go to afternoon class. However; my eating disorder held me back. I was constantly exhausted, it took me almost a week to fully recover and I was often close to fainting. But I still wanted to train – so everything quickly came to a head; I had to confront myself and ask – did I want to train to my absolute potential today? Or did I want to starve myself and go to sleep weak and exhausted and hating myself? And to my surprise jiu jitsu won. Jiu jitsu has won every time so far.
Everyday is still a battle but I’m much happier, I’m fitter than I’ve ever been a long time and I’m incredibly grateful for that.
It’s weird how jiu jitsu has seeped into other facets of my life; (Jiu Jitsu even inadvertently launched my legal career last week!) I have a long way to go and it’s only going to get harder. But I suppose that is the real beauty of jiu jtsu;
It also gives you the mental fortitude to be patient, to persevere and to honestly confront yourself – and ask; am I being the best version of myself today? Because if you’re not approaching jiu jitsu (or anything for that matter) with all you heart – why do it at all?

Also FYI, I now have massive biceps – yes, you can have a look at them but don’t touch them. I charge $5 per photo of each bicep and $7 if you want me to autograph said photo.

Happy rolling m8s!”

“Great, clean place to train with awesome instructors and students. No egos at this academy… just a desire to lean, train, grow and to help teammates do the same. Couldn’t ask for a better place to have fun, meet people and train to excel at this sport.”

“I have trained in several different martial arts academies around Melbourne, but nowhere have I had the same level of instruction and family atmosphere as at Immersion. You’ll come to train with world-class Jiu Jitsu coaches and stay for the friends you make on the mat.”

“Immersion MMA is an exceptional academy in every way. My personal experience here with brasilian jiu jitsu has been fantastic. Dave and Lee take a very diligent interest in their students, making the time and effort to find and fix technical gaps. Furthermore, the environment is friendly and most importantly very safe. Whether you are looking for a great way to get in shape or are quite serious about competition, this is definitely the academy for you!”
